Dealing with Writer’s Block

Good one!  Everyone has times when they just can’t force a word out, and if you do go ahead and force it out, you usually end up scrapping what you’ve written. You’ve been hit by The DREADED WRITER’s BLOCK.

So here’s some of the strategies that I have in place for Dealing with Writer’s Block.

1) Leave it alone!

If I have the time in my schedule, I leave it alone and don’t go near it. Just walk away. Go! Get out of your head! Go for a walk, take a nap, call a friend for coffee. Sometimes, you just need a break. Don’t allow yourself to stress about needing to get to work on it. These breaks can be very necessary, so respect them, and allow them to happen. You’ll write when you are ready and it will be of higher quality for the wait, which in the end, will likely save your time copyediting – and your sanity.

2) Work on Something Else!

I’ll pull out a different story, that is written but in need of a polish and do some copy editing, so that I am still actually working on SOMETHING! Again, respect your brain’s need for a break. Chances are, you aren’t ready to write whatever it is you’re writing, until your subconscious has finished chewing on it. Do some meaningless, or menial exercises until you feel ready to try again.

3) Watch it, Don’t Write it!

If I’m feeling like I really have to meet deadlines and get going on what I’m working on, there is only one solution for me.
I sit in front of my keyboard, with my novel open to where I need to write. I pull up a playlist, I close my eyes, and I allow myself to relax into almost a meditative place. There, I allow my mind to drift with the music, and to visualize my story as a movie, I reach the scene that I need to write, and I watch it happen, with the soundtrack.
Then I open my eyes, and write down what I’ve seen. Then I’m away.
The Playlist will depend upon How I’m Feeling, and What the Scene is About.

Works every time!
